Welcome back to Overmatter by me, Natasha Loder.
This publication was originally hosted at Blogger and ran between 2004 and 2017. I stopped writing it when I got distracted by other things. Mainly life. But the point of Overmatter today is the same as it has always been: that there is too much left to say at the end of a working day. More stories to tell, and too many little interesting details that need further sifting. At the same time, there are too many gatekeepers in journalism. These are the people that have to be convinced that there is something worth saying before they let you say it.
In the lexicon of journalism: overmatter is material that cannot be used for lack of space. So that is what is supposed to live here. Yet having the freedom of the open page, and an endless supply of pixels presents another kind of problem. That of writing far too much, of failing to be concise and to the point, and thinking too little of one’s readers. I’ll do my best to stay interesting and relevant. So please do sign up, share this with anyone who might like it.
I’ve spent more than two decades at The Economist, and in that time I’ve come across some of the most extraordinary people and stories. I would like to share more in this newsletter, or is it a blog? Let’s call it a newsletterblog.
